“Did you know? In 1833, Britain used £20 million *, 40% of its national budget, to buy freedom for all slaves in the Empire. The amount of money borrowed for the Slavery Abolition Act was so large that it wasn’t paid off until 2015. Which means that living British citizens helped pay to end the slave trade”.  (* equal to £2.4 billion today)” (Treasury tweet 9/2/2020)

That means that today’s descendants of slaves – who never got any compensation – have been paying for the compensation paid to slave owners !

Black Lives Labour demands that the Labour Party

  • Commits to reparations to the families of slaves, and that measures, including legislation, are taken to recover assets from the estates of the decedents of the slave owners.
  • Undertakes the re-writing of Labour Party foreign policy to align it with international law and human rights
  • Endorsing models for school curricula  [NEU] which give an honest account of Britain’s imperial history and the provision of positive role models for Black, Asian, African and Oppressed children
  • The establishment of an International Genocide Memorial Day
