Marcus Rashford, Reece James, Romaine Sawyer, Axel Tuanzebe, Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Tammy Abrahams, and Yakou Mieta have all been racially abused online. At Millwall football club recently, racist football fans attacked supporters of the Black Lives Matter bending of the knee. This should be a warning to us all, but especially to the leadership of the Labour Party who should know the lessons of history.
Fascism doesn’t arrive suddenly, announced by some charismatic leader, it is insinuated and nurtured by racists as a false solution to the economic and social ruins of peoples lives, in a crisis where the elite enrich themselves and the poor are driven into destitution.
In his reaction Marcus stood tall, “Humanity and social media at its worst. Yes I’m a black man and I live every day proud that I am.” There can be no pride in the Labour Party until it stands and acts in solidarity with Black footballers.
