Colston’s slave ships were built in Bristol. Bristol was a prime slave trade port. The enormous wealth generated by the slave trade was the financial foundation of the British industrial revolution, and thus the foundation of modern society. That is why there are statues paying homage to slave traders in our major cities. And Kier Starmer chose to stand with them, criticising the dethroning of Colston, and calling for those responsible to be punished. This revealed his real position on the Black Lives Matter movement. It is clear that under Starmer Labour will not decolonize the story of our history, and thus cannot become an anti-racist party.
BLL states the Party should back the dethroning of Colston and demand immunity from prosecution for the activists.
